Position Title: School Safety Officer

Reports To: Principal or designated representative

Employment Terms: 10-month role, 35-hour work week. Compensation determined by the Board of Education.

Primary Objective:
To cultivate constructive interactions between students and school officials. This role serves as a prominent, proactive enforcement officer addressing security issues within and around the educational facility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the safety and security of school buildings, grounds, and facilities.
  • Monitor campus boundaries, dining areas, hallways, classrooms, locker rooms, restrooms, gates, parking lots, and bus stops; maintain order and security of the premises; escort students to the office as necessary, and report any unusual activities or unauthorized individuals.
  • Assist visitors to the facilities, approach suspicious or unauthorized individuals, and ascertain their reasons for being on school property; detain or report individuals suspected of illegal or prohibited activities following established protocols.
  • Implement school regulations and policies to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, vehicles, and property; enforce relevant restrictions and guidelines.
  • Observe student behavior during transitions between classes; prevent unauthorized exits from school premises.
  • Maintain records of interactions and activities.
  • Report incidents and observations to the appropriate school or law enforcement authorities; collaborate with law enforcement agencies regarding violations of school policies and applicable laws.
  • Monitor and report student conduct to ensure adherence to school rules; assess the need for referrals based on established guidelines.
  • Utilize communication devices, such as radios, as required.
  • Inform administrators of any building conditions or practices that may hinder security maintenance within the facility or on the grounds.
  • Act as a liaison among students, employing de-escalation techniques when necessary.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development sessions as assigned.
  • Meet the physical demands required to effectively perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Carry out additional related tasks as assigned by the principal.
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, CPR, and First Aid certification.
  • Ability to engage professionally and appropriately with students, the public, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Civil Service or Law Enforcement.
  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Social Services, or a related field.
  • Bilingual or multilingual capabilities are highly desirable.
Performance Evaluation: Conducted annually by the Principal or designated representative.
