Additionally, the Pedestrian Safety Officer is responsible for managing the flow of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic effectively and safely. The officer collaborates closely with school bus operators and parents to facilitate smooth operations while maintaining safety standards. They may also assist in overseeing special events and actively engage with the community to advocate for traffic calming measures.
This role requires a proactive mindset, combining vigilance with strong communication skills. The Pedestrian Safety Officer acts as a vital link between schools, students, parents, and the wider community, enhancing the overall safety and well-being of the school environment.
Responsibilities include a comprehensive understanding of traffic regulations, situational awareness, the ability to utilize traffic control signage, and the capacity to take assertive yet courteous action when necessary. This role is essential in fostering a secure environment for students commuting to and from school, ensuring their safety is prioritized at all times.
Assignments are made by the Chief School Crossing Guard, who serves as the supervisor. Work is conducted with a degree of independence, following general or specific instructions. Performance is evaluated through meetings, reports, and/or observation of outcomes.
Typical Duties
- Guides and assists children and pedestrians in safely crossing at their designated intersection.
- Controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic, advising children on when and where to cross.
- Maintains oversight of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout their assignment, utilizing signage and hand signals.
- Instructs school bus drivers on optimal staging for pick-ups to avoid conflicts with crossing points.
- Directs parents dropping off or picking up children to safe areas that do not interfere with crossing points or traffic flow.
- Documents details of non-compliant or erratic vehicle operations and reports them to the relevant authorities.
- Stays vigilant for approaching emergency vehicles and instructs both pedestrians and drivers on appropriate actions.
- Alerts the Supervisor regarding any damaged or missing school signs or pavement markings.
- Assists in managing traffic and ensuring safety during special events like school functions, parades, and community gatherings.
- Engages with community members to promote traffic calming and pedestrian safety, providing education on existing or new regulations.
- Offers assistance during significant weather events such as snowstorms or hurricanes.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
A high school diploma or equivalent, vocational training, or a minimum of two years of experience in public service or a related field.

- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, particularly those concerning school crossings and pedestrian responsibilities.
- Understanding of the principles governing traffic control devices such as stop signs, signals, and street markings.
- Strong observational skills to identify vehicles by type, color, and license plate.

Compensation and Employment TermsThis is a General Fund, "Non-Tested" position.
This part-time role does not qualify for medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, union membership, or any union contractual benefits. Any period of part-time employment will not be interpreted as probationary employment. Individuals may not hold two concurrent part-time positions with the City and/or the Board of Education simultaneously.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including drug screening in accordance with the City's Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
