Laboratory Specialist

The Derré Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Specialist to join their team.
Job Summary:The Laboratory Specialist will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator to participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, microscopy, and small animals (mice) techniques.
Responsibilities:- Conduct laboratory experiments and procedures, including maintenance of eukaryotic cell lines, generation and amplification of Chlamydia strains, and general molecular biology techniques.
- Perform image acquisition of Chlamydia infected cells or tissue by standard and confocal microscopy, and analyze images using microscopy computer software.
- Handle and infect small animals (mice) and collect data.
- Participate in formulating research methods, suggesting options for improving quality, and recommending solutions.
- Oversee day-to-day operation of projects, schedule and maintain records of equipment/facilities, and train users in equipment operation and research techniques.
- Determine interview procedures and conduct interviews, work independently on collection of data, and analyze research results.
- Confer with PIs in developing plans for research projects and discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.
- May supervise research support personnel and manage budgets.
- Bachelor's degree.
- 6 years of experience in a lab technician role.
- Master's degree may substitute for required experience.
- 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
