Neurocritical Care Unit

The Neurocritical Care Unit at UNC REX Hospital is recognized as an Advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center by the Joint Commission. Our pride lies in our exceptional team. Collaborating closely with specialists such as speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, occupational and physical therapists, as well as social and case managers, our skilled nurses deliver exemplary interdisciplinary care to our patients and the community.

Our esteemed neuro-critical care team is available 24/7, utilizing cutting-edge technology including external ventricular drains, intracranial pressure monitors, electroencephalography, and point-of-care ultrasound devices in our modernized 10-bed unit. Patients experiencing conditions such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subdural hematomas, coma, brain and spine tumors, seizure disorders, and neuro-infections receive compassionate and advanced care.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Professional Development - Engages in identifying and addressing personal learning needs. Attends educational programs based on these needs. Utilizes relevant patient education materials and assesses the readiness of patients and their families to learn.
2. Care Evaluation - Establishes expected patient outcomes and seeks guidance for care plan revisions. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to evaluate patient care and ensures effective communication for continuity of care.
3. Care Implementation - Demonstrates proficiency in managing patients with complex health issues, considering physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects. Conducts bedside testing as required and adheres to organizational standards in care delivery.
4. Leadership Development - With support, sets professional growth goals and works towards achieving them within designated timeframes. Participates in unit goals and performance improvement initiatives.
5. Patient Assessment - Analyzes complex data to prioritize care needs, integrating physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety considerations. Builds relationships with families to empower them in advocating for their loved ones.
6. Care Planning - Collaborates with patients and families to develop or update care plans, utilizing multidisciplinary resources effectively.
7. Research Engagement - Reviews relevant literature to enhance practice and shares insights with the team for applicability.

Qualifications:
* Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
* If hired after a specified date, must enroll in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Nursing within a designated timeframe.
Licensure/Certification:
* Must hold a valid Registered Nurse license in North Carolina.
* Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Experience:
* Minimum of one year of nursing experience required.
