About the Role

The University of Chicago seeks a highly skilled and experienced Collections Manager to join its team at the Smart Museum of Art. As a key member of the museum's registration and exhibitions department, this role will oversee the management of the Smart Museum collection and loans, ensuring their proper care, conservation, and exhibition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the registration and exhibition process, including the coordination of loans, exhibitions, and classes.
  • Supervise and train collections and exhibitions staff, including the Assistant Registrar and temporary exhibition and collections staff.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the care and management of the museum's collections, including conservation, storage, and exhibition.
  • Collaborate with curators and other departments to plan and coordinate exhibitions, ensuring effective cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Manage the exhibition calendar, including the planning and coordination of work required to meet deadlines and budgets.
  • Oversee the proper management of the TMS collections database and eMuseum, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Develop and implement special projects related to collections management processes and facilities, as needed.
  • Maintain the Smart's Collections Management Policy and Emergency Preparedness Plan, communicating and enforcing these policies and best practices to all staff.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in a related field, such as museum studies or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline, including experience in museum registration and/or collections management.
  • Strong computer skills and previous work with relational databases, including experience using The Museum System (TMS) database and/or related Gallery Systems products.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
