Your Role

As a key member of our Engineering team, you will evaluate data and formulate implementation strategies for optimizing production processes. Your focus will be on enhancing efficiencies by minimizing waste, which directly influences our operational costs. You will play a crucial role in the manufacturing of our renowned brands.

The Automation and Controls Engineering Manager will be tasked with defining and refining the company's long-term technology strategy while leading a skilled team of engineers across both hardware and software domains to innovate and design automation solutions. This position will oversee the development, execution, and management of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in our current and future operations. You will guide the assessment, upkeep, and enhancement of our existing automation and control systems. By merging foundational controls and process engineering expertise with cutting-edge automation advancements, you will deliver innovative solutions to real-world manufacturing challenges. This role involves scouting for emerging technologies and evaluating their effectiveness in addressing business needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Formulate and execute the manufacturing vision and technology roadmap that aligns with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
  • Make informed technology decisions for automation and present the roadmap for both immediate and future growth.
  • Leverage deep process engineering knowledge and machine learning capabilities to develop scalable control and manufacturing solutions.
  • Translate business challenges into technological solutions that encompass various products and services, ensuring alignment with business goals.
  • Monitor and assess external technology trends that may influence the company. Conduct research on leading-edge automation technologies and evaluate their feasibility for implementation.
  • Develop standard software and hardware architectures for all automation initiatives and collaborate with multiple teams for coordinated execution.
  • Engage with external partners, including food processing equipment vendors and academic institutions, to innovate and validate new systems and technologies.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in manufacturing, particularly in automation and controls design; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 2 years of leadership experience, including team development and management.
  • Experience in developing distributed, networked control systems, especially IIoT solutions.
  • Familiarity with Lean or Six Sigma methodologies (green or black belt certification preferred).
  • Knowledge of engineering principles related to food processing and the meat industry is preferred.
  • Ability to apply sound engineering principles to operational and design challenges.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Capability to foster a respectful and team-oriented atmosphere while building strong working relationships.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and training to engineering professionals.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.

  • The majority of time is spent in an office setting outside of the production area. The production environment may include wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.
