Your Role

As a key member of our Engineering team, you will be tasked with analyzing data and formulating implementation strategies aimed at optimizing production processes. Your focus will be on enhancing efficiencies by minimizing resource waste, which directly influences our operational costs. Your contributions will be vital in the manufacturing of renowned brands such as Smithfield, Eckrich, and Nathan's Famous, ensuring we meet the expectations of our customers and consumers.

The Automation and Controls Engineering Manager will play a pivotal role in defining and refining the company’s long-term technology strategy. You will lead a skilled team of engineers across both hardware and software domains to innovate and design automation solutions. This position will oversee the development, implementation, and management of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) within our current and future operations. You will be instrumental in assessing, maintaining, and upgrading our existing automation and control systems, combining foundational controls and process engineering expertise with the latest advancements in automation to deliver effective solutions for real-world manufacturing challenges. Additionally, you will explore emerging technologies to address business needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute the manufacturing vision and technology roadmap that aligns with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
  • Guide technology selection for automation and present a comprehensive technology roadmap for both immediate and future growth.
  • Leverage deep process engineering knowledge and machine learning capabilities to create scalable control and manufacturing solutions.
  • Translate business challenges into technological solutions that may involve multiple products and services, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Monitor and assess external technology trends that could impact the organization, conducting research on cutting-edge automation technologies.
  • Establish standard software and hardware architectures for all automation initiatives, collaborating with various teams for coordinated execution.
  • Engage with external partners, including food processing equipment vendors and academic institutions, to develop and validate new systems and technologies.

Qualifications

To excel in this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in manufacturing, particularly in automation and controls design.
  • At least 2 years of leadership experience, including team development and management.
  • Experience in developing distributed, networked control systems, particularly IIoT solutions.
  • Familiarity with Lean or Six Sigma methodologies (certification preferred).
  • Knowledge of engineering principles related to food processing and the meat industry is advantageous.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply sound engineering principles to operational and design challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with strong organizational and analytical abilities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to foster a respectful and team-oriented atmosphere while building strong working relationships.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and training to engineering professionals.
  • Oversee supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training employees, assigning work, appraising performance, and addressing employee concerns.
