Job Overview

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Masters Swim Coach and the Recreation Coordinator, the Assistant Coach plays a crucial role in managing daily operations and administrative tasks related to the swimming program while delivering exceptional coaching.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are essential to this position:

  • Assist and provide information to new participants in the program.
  • Communicate details about team tryouts, clinics, and practice schedules.
  • Coach adult swimmers, focusing on skill development and improvement.
  • Collaborate with the coaching staff to develop a comprehensive swimming program for both youth and adults.
  • Support the Coach in organizing and leading structured workouts for the team.
  • Encourage team growth and membership through positive engagement and team-building activities.
  • Participate in and assist with all scheduled competitions, events, and team activities.
  • Attend all team and coaching meetings to stay informed and engaged.
  • Instruct and correct swimmers during practice sessions to enhance their skills.
  • Promote participation in open water, pool, and triathlon events.
  • Assist the Coach in managing registration fees for all participants and programs.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with athletes regarding updates on practice and competition schedules.
  • Set up and dismantle equipment as required for training sessions.
  • Perform other related coaching duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the following:

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Understanding of effective swimming techniques and objectives.
  • Familiarity with relevant rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Customer service principles and practices.
  • Social media engagement strategies.
  • Swimming training methodologies.
  • Standard safety protocols.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to ensure the health and safety of participants.
  • Capability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and participants.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated swimming and safety techniques.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old as per US Masters Swimming requirements.

Experience in competitive coaching and swimming is preferred.

A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and understand simple instructions and correspondence. Proficient in writing basic correspondence and effectively presenting information in small group settings.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in various formats and to address problems involving concrete variables.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, including First Aid/CPR/AED, within 90 days of hire.

OTHER SKILLS:

Strong swimming skills are essential.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements for this position include:

Work primarily takes place in a swimming pool environment, necessitating stamina for extended periods in the water and the ability to lift moderate to heavy equipment or assist individuals as needed. Candidates must possess mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push, pull equipment, and swim. Adequate vision and hearing are required to ensure safety in crowded and noisy conditions. The ability to swim distances and dive to appropriate depths is necessary, along with the capability to lift weights of 150 pounds or more with assistance.

During the performance of job duties, employees are regularly required to swim, stand, walk, use hands for various tasks, reach with arms, and communicate effectively.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment includes:

Regular outdoor work in a pool setting with wet and slippery conditions. Exposure to varying weather conditions and potential exposure to chemicals used in aquatic facilities. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
