Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pharmacy Technician to join our team at the University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting our pharmacists and other healthcare professionals in providing exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare patient-specific sterile products, including hazardous medications, under pharmacist supervision.
  • Perform daily cleanroom maintenance activities, including cleaning and decontamination of equipment and review of maintenance records.
  • Provide patient/customer service at the Triage Window, communicating with patients and healthcare personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Screen prescriptions for completeness and formulary status, and determine waiting/pick-up time and fill out patient call check.
  • Order entry of prescriptions, including entering patient profile information, coverage/third-party information, and reading and interpreting prescriptions.
  • Fulfill prescriptions, including labeling and packaging medications, and maintaining area orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Assist in on-the-job training of new technicians and coordinate technical activities with other team members.
  • Conduct audits in patient care clinic areas, including medication security, segregation of dosage forms, and expiration dates.
  • Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including weekly and monthly inventories, ordering replacement supplies, and auditing records.
Requirements
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), with ongoing education requirements and maintenance of certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences, or satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with public contact/customer service.
  • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations.
  • Experience with inventory maintenance activities.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience working in a detail-oriented work environment.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer programs.
  • Experience working in a healthcare environment with one-on-one patient interaction and experience handling challenging interactions.
