Job Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our Children's Hospital inpatient team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for supporting pharmacy services, including assisting with technician training programs, monitoring compliance with established policies and procedures, inventory control, and special projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision by a pharmacist, perform activities associated with supporting SFCH pharmacy services.
  • Assist with technician training programs, monitoring compliance with established policies and procedures, inventory control, and special projects.
  • Coordinate the daily functions of pharmacy technicians to meet service needs as identified by the pharmacist.
  • Provide supervision to Pharmacy Technicians, including instruction, evaluation, and follow-up on training needs.
  • Responsible for coordinating maintenance of area equipment and facility, ordering supplies, and handling/disposition of records, as well as documentation of quality assurance activities.
  • Check products prepared by other technicians, as permitted by Iowa law, and assist with implementation of new services and/or development of new procedures.
  • Assist with interviewing technician candidates and checking references, provides input on evaluation of technician candidates.
  • Provides classroom instruction to new technicians in the absence of the Technician Supervisor/trainer.
  • Assist with inventory management and medication recall activities.
  • Checks products prepared by other technicians, as permitted by Iowa law.
  • Maintain competency and perform all duties and responsibilities of Pharmacy Technician.
Requirements
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience: Any combination of four years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR four years of experience as a pharmacy technician.
Desired Qualifications
  • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in time-sensitive situations.
  • Previous work experience in an environment that included inventory maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Previous work experience in healthcare.
  • Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level.
