Job Summary
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled Desktop Engineer to join our team. As a Desktop Engineer, you will be responsible for planning, managing, and supporting all desktop enterprise solutions for hardware, operating systems, patch management, antivirus, software distribution, and mobile device management.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, package, distribute, and deploy/install or oversee the installation of applications to desktop environments.
- Assist in the testing of software to ensure proper operation and freedom from defects.
- Engineer, manage, and maintain a large infrastructure of hardware and software (operating systems and applications) distributed over numerous user sites.
- Troubleshoot and resolve user application issues and proactively anticipate and resolve ongoing or possible future problems.
- Analyze and create applications deployment and management strategies for PCs, tablets, and mobile devices.
- Analyze technology risks and security risks and notify supervisor if warranted.
- Manage or oversee the management of systems upgrades and improvements via application of patches.
- Ensure user accessibility, stability, and security in accordance with District policy standards.
- Create, update, and maintain core documentation, including manuals for standard operating procedures, best practices, or mitigation plans.
- Assign, supervise, and review work; ensure staff compliance with District policies and procedures, including Personnel Rules and Administrative Procedures; complete performance reviews; address employee complaints and grievances; may recommend employment actions such as hiring, transfer, suspension, promotion, or discharge.
- Monitor or track project milestones and deliverables.
Requirements
- Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in information technology, computer science, or a closely related field.
- Six years of professional-level experience managing and/or supporting desktop enterprise solutions.
- Considerable knowledge of desktop operating systems, including software package development, configuration management, patch testing, and networking.
- Considerable knowledge of desktop hardware, including PCs, tablets, mobile devices, and thin clients.
- Considerable knowledge of enterprise software used to deploy and manage operating systems, virtual desktops, and applications.
- Considerable knowledge of risk assessment related to technology implementation and security.
- Skill in technical writing, documentation, and script writing.
- Active listening skills.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate technical and administrative staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Substitution
- Graduate study in the designated fields may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
- Full-time paid experience managing and/or supporting desktop enterprise solutions may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- A Microsoft MCITP, MCSE, or VMware VCP certification related to desktop or client support may be substituted for one year of the required education or experience.
Promotional Requirement
- One year of service with the District as a Desktop Engineer, A/V Administrator, or Computer Systems Administrator.
- Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
