Overview

The Infection Control Nurse Coordinator is a Registered Nurse who possesses the necessary qualifications through education, training, experience, or certification in the field of infection prevention and control. This role is pivotal in monitoring laboratory cultures to identify, isolate, and mitigate hospital-acquired infections. The Infection Control Nurse Coordinator works in collaboration with the Quality Director, Medical Staff, and clinical teams to enhance patient outcomes and safeguard healthcare personnel from occupational exposures. This position is recognized by the governing body as the designated infection control nurse responsible for overseeing infection prevention and control initiatives. The coordinator reports directly to the hospital's Quality Director and supervises the Infection Control RN role.

  1. Core Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates infection prevention and control initiatives aimed at reducing hospital-acquired infections and preventing staff exposure to infectious diseases. Oversees the Tuberculosis Screening and Employee Vaccination program.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing infection surveillance, prevention, and control policies, isolation protocols, and the Infection Prevention Control Program plan, including risk assessments and exposure control strategies.
  • Conducts annual risk assessments based on surveillance data and findings as outlined in the IPCP plan.
  • Coordinates the review of laboratory reports related to C. difficile, MRSA, CAUTI, CLABSI, and SSI for data collection and monitoring, ensuring timely communication of this information to clinical leaders and reporting to the Quality Council.
  • In partnership with the Quality Director and Infection Control RN, conducts rounds on inpatient units to monitor isolation practices, device counts, and compliance with infection prevention standards.
  • Responsible for chart abstraction or delegation of chart abstraction for hospital-acquired infections and reportable diseases, with data reporting to the CDC's National Health Safety Network portal. Serves as the facility administrator for NHSN.
  • Stays informed on CDC, APIC, NHSN, and DNV standards and regulations, as well as evidence-based practices related to the control and treatment of infectious diseases.
  • Analyzes internal data on hospital-acquired infections and evaluates the effectiveness of various prevention strategies for performance improvement.
  • Investigates potential outbreaks and formulates response strategies to prevent further spread, reporting findings to the appropriate health department.
  • Acts as a resource for Medical Staff, hospital personnel, and Administration regarding infectious diseases.
  • Provides competency-based training and education to hospital staff, medical staff, and contract personnel upon hire and annually on practical applications of infection prevention and control principles.
  • Collaborates closely with department leaders to maintain a sanitary physical environment throughout the hospital.
  • Communicates and collaborates with the antibiotic stewardship program.
  • Leads the interdisciplinary Infection Control Committee, creating reporting plans, meeting schedules, and agendas, while supporting committee members responsible for all aspects of infection control.
  • Participates in community initiatives to educate the public about infection prevention and control.
  • Assists in evaluating and selecting products related to cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of the environment and equipment.
  • Supports employee health activities and may travel offsite to assist with administering employee vaccinations.
  1. Essential Skills and Competencies:
Membership in the local APIC chapter is encouraged.

Knowledge of Infection Control and Employee Health program regulations.

Proficient in computer applications including word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, and web-based research.

Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, interpret medical orders, and correspondence.

Effectively navigates the Electronic Health Record to obtain infection-related information.

Demonstrates the ability to prioritize, organize, and execute work assignments independently and efficiently, showing self-direction and flexibility.

Possesses professional knowledge of healthcare services and complex hospital processes.

Works well both in teams and independently.
  1. Minimum Qualifications: Active RN license in Mississippi, with a nursing or related professional healthcare degree. Certification in Infection Control is preferred but can be obtained after a specified period in the role. Access to CDC's NHSN is required, which can be obtained post-hire. Tuberculosis skin testing certification and BLS certification are mandatory. Performance of employee drug screening may be required when classes are available. Must be able to read, write, and understand verbal and written communication.
