Position Overview:
The Internal Audit Department at the University of New Mexico is in search of a dedicated Internal Auditor. This role presents a unique opportunity for a driven professional to contribute significantly to a vital independent department. The department operates under the administrative oversight of the UNM President and functions in alignment with the Audit and Compliance Committee of the UNM Board of Regents. The Internal Auditor will support UNM personnel in achieving their responsibilities effectively, efficiently, and economically by delivering objective evaluations of the reviewed activities. The auditor will be tasked with conducting operational, compliance, financial, and investigative audits of moderate complexity, as well as providing management advisory services. Given the nature of the work, attention to detail is crucial, as inaccuracies may lead to delays and disrupt activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Formulate audit strategies and execute initial and follow-up audits in compliance with professional standards.
  2. Assess audit outcomes; compile and present findings and recommendations to management through both oral and written reports.
  3. Collaborate and communicate with administrators, faculty, staff, and external audit and law enforcement entities as necessary.
  4. Advise university administrators, faculty, and staff on operational and administrative matters.
  5. May oversee and/or mentor junior staff and/or student employees.
  6. Stay informed about university policies and procedures, current trends in accounting and auditing, and relevant changes in local, state, and federal regulations.
  7. Perform additional job-related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree; a minimum of 1 year of experience directly related to the specified duties and responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, MBA, MPA, etc.
  • Experience with Banner software.
  • Familiarity with electronic work paper software.
  • Intermediate or higher proficiency in spreadsheets to quantify and illustrate financial reports, comparisons, impacts, and projections.
  • Intermediate or higher proficiency in word processing.
