Job Overview

The City of Lansing's Police Department is looking for a dedicated full-time Correctional Facility Officer to enhance their professional Law Enforcement team. This role involves managing the processing of individuals taken into custody, which includes responsibilities such as booking, fingerprinting, and ensuring the safety and security of detainees. The primary objective of the Correctional Facility Officer is to facilitate the efficient and secure operation of the Detention Center.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to quickly adapt to changing policies and procedures, work effectively under pressure, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, maintain composure in challenging situations, and exhibit strong attention to detail. Special Requirements:
This position mandates that candidates be eligible for bonding under the City's blanket bond. Therefore, applicants must not have any history of dishonest conduct. A thorough background investigation will be conducted, and candidates must authorize the release of relevant information regarding their criminal history.

Additionally, candidates are required to complete a minimum 4-hour Job Shadow in the Detention facility and engage with a Detention Recruiting Officer to ensure a clear understanding of the role's responsibilities and demands before proceeding to testing or interviews.

Availability:
Candidates must be prepared to work 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and various overtime assignments. Shifts will rotate every six weeks from day to night.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in security, law enforcement, or military service.
  • Completion of relevant college coursework or vocational training.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, particularly in word processing and data entry.
  • Bilingual abilities are advantageous.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities or mental health issues is preferred.
Essential Functions:
  • Conduct daily preliminary breath tests for pre-sentenced individuals.
  • Prepare and release detainees to the appropriate facilities.
  • Operate the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) terminal and respond to information requests.
  • Manage the distribution of food and medication to detainees.
  • Escort detainees as required.
Physical Requirements:
This role requires physical capabilities such as standing, walking, lifting, and maintaining visual acuity. Candidates must also pass a respirator physical and be able to utilize safety equipment as necessary.

Selection Process:
The selection process includes a LEIN check, job shadowing, assessment testing, interviews, background investigations, psychological evaluations, and a pre-employment physical/drug screening.
