Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage in scientific activities related to the research, design, and enhancement of laboratory and field projects under the guidance of seasoned professionals.
  • Participate in the collection and analysis of data to ascertain needs, requirements, and operations for project design and support. Specifically, acquire proficiency in performing tracer gas concentration measurements using flame ionization detection and velocity and turbulence assessments using laser Doppler velocimetry in the EPA meteorological wind tunnel.
  • Responsibilities encompass experimental setup, design of measurement protocols, model construction, instrument upkeep, quality assurance, and preparation of standard operating procedures, along with wind tunnel measurements and data reporting.
  • Learn to monitor and adhere to equipment maintenance schedules; procure supplies and consumables; conduct routine equipment maintenance such as calibration, cleaning, and filter replacement; coordinate vendor service and repairs; and maintain calibration and usage logs.
  • Assist the laboratory team with repairs, maintenance, and daily calibrations of instruments and wind tunnel equipment.
  • Undertake additional technical tasks as required.
Data Processing Duties:
  • Download data to personal computers.
  • Conduct preliminary data validation using Excel templates and R.
  • Prepare summary reports for data review.
  • Manage raw data files.
  • Complete data validation spreadsheets.
Communication Responsibilities:
  • Handle raw data files.
  • Contribute to standard operating procedures, monthly reports, and final reports.
  • Complete data validation spreadsheets.
  • Upload processed data files for client evaluation.
  • Prepare data summary reports.
  • Transcribe laboratory and field notes.

Qualifications:

This position supports the Research Laboratory Support contract with the US Environmental Protection Agency. Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited institution in a relevant technical field. 0-2 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety and maintenance, experience in maintaining laboratory records, and experience in meeting project deadlines (outside of academic settings is preferred but not mandatory).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational abilities.
  • Proficient in statistical software, such as R and Python.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications for data management, basic analysis, and technical report writing.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with gas sensors or aerosol instrumentation.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Essential Functions:

Physical Requirements: Lifting - 25 lbs - 10%, Climbing - Stairs and ladders - 10%, Crawling - 10%, Special Clothing/Equipment - Respirator (N95, N100, or PAPR) - 10%, Safety Shoes - 10%, Laser Safety Glasses - 40%.

Work Environment:

Indoor - 75%, Outdoor Onsite - 25%. Travel/Transportation - Provide own transportation between facilities; occasional use of company vehicle for supply pickup.

Equipment Involved:

Office equipment, general hand tools, aerosol/gas generators, environmental monitors, laser Doppler velocimetry systems, fog generators, hydrocarbon flame ionization analyzers, mass flow controllers, and other sampling devices.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is essential, Monday through Friday, 1st Shift.

Other Essential Functions:

Must successfully complete a background check and drug test. Must be a US Citizen.
