Job Overview:

The Automation Controls Specialist will oversee the management and implementation of various mechanical systems, electrical components, and control functions within industrial automation settings. This role involves diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and enhancing mechanical systems and control mechanisms. The successful candidate will also engage in the specification and programming of PLCs, robots, and servo systems as needed. Additionally, this position includes mentoring junior automation engineers and mechatronic apprentices while managing projects effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality engineering solutions and facilitate the installation of new equipment and upgrades through the commissioning phase for successful completion.
  • Analyze complex systems and drive solutions on Siemens and other platforms.
  • Create detailed schematic diagrams.
  • Collaborate with integrators, contractors, and site personnel to activate new functionalities and troubleshoot emerging issues.
  • Lead modifications of production equipment, testing systems, and communication and control devices.
  • Possess experience with facility power distribution and building infrastructure systems, including Motor Control Centers (MCCs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), lighting, HVAC, and alarm systems.
  • Support the specification of electrical components for custom automated machinery.
  • Develop technical manuals, drawings, models, training materials, preventative maintenance plans, and troubleshooting guides for newly established automated processes.
  • Manage project budgets and timelines while providing regular progress updates. Demonstrate the ability to self-direct on projects and manage a team effectively.
  • Have experience with fieldbus communication networks such as Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, and Profibus.
  • Work with various PLC platforms, including Siemens programming, servos, machine safety systems, and 3-phase motor controls.
  • Lead, mentor, and train peers and technicians.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and regulations regarding equipment and personnel.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Collaborate with counterparts in international locations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Automation Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience or training.
  • Proficiency in Siemens PLC systems (S7, TIA Portal) is essential.
  • Experience in automated packaging is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing and ergonomic principles is preferred.
  • Knowledge of 6-axis robot programming and machine vision principles is beneficial.
  • Project management experience, particularly in a manufacturing context, is desired.
  • Understanding and application of NEC and NFPA 70E standards.
  • Five or more years of leadership experience in Manufacturing, Automation, Programming, and Machine Controls.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time based on project requirements.
