Job Overview:

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff in providing exceptional care to patients within the operating room environment.


Key Responsibilities:

This job description outlines the essential responsibilities regularly assigned. Associates may be requested to undertake additional tasks as directed by their supervisor. Leadership reserves the right to modify the duties of the position as necessary.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding and application of aseptic techniques.
  • Assist the circulating nurse in preparing for surgical procedures and managing turnovers between operations.
  • Prepare and maintain a sterile field for surgical interventions, ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are readily available.
  • During surgical procedures, the technologist will: 1) Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and provide instruments and supplies as required, 2) Conduct counts with the circulating nurse, 3) Handle specimens in accordance with established protocols, 4) Ensure proper care of instruments and supplies post-procedure, and 5) Serve as the second assisting technologist, supporting the surgeon and/or first assistant by executing technical tasks without suturing, clamping, dissecting, or inserting instruments into body cavities.
  • Ensure the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and overall environmental safety.
  • Stay informed about current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Participate in in-services, committees, and other professional development activities to maintain standards.
  • Act as a preceptor for new associates and students.

Qualifications:
Work Experience:
* Preferred - Previous experience as a surgical technologist.

Education:
* Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
* BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
* High School Diploma or GED.
* Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
* Preferred - Associate's degree.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
* Proficient in the use of various surgical equipment and instruments.
* Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and other hospital staff.
* Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served in the assigned service area.

Department Overview:
The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing General Surgery department features 20 state-of-the-art surgical suites, providing services for both minor and major surgeries, including open-heart procedures and major trauma cases. The surgical specialties encompass neuro, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, orthopedics, plastics, ENT, pediatrics, general surgery, gynecology, genitourinary, and da Vinci robotic surgeries. The patient demographic includes neonates, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics.
