Overview:

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff in providing care to patients within the surgical environment.


Key Responsibilities:

This job description outlines the essential duties typically assigned to this role. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by leadership as necessary.

  • Maintain proficiency in aseptic techniques.
  • Assist the circulating nurse in preparing for surgical procedures and managing transitions between operations.
  • Set up sterile fields for surgical interventions, ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are readily available.
  • During surgical procedures, the technologist will:
    1. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and provide instruments and supplies as required.
    2. Conduct counts with the circulating nurse.
    3. Handle specimens according to established protocols.
    4. Ensure proper care of instruments and supplies post-procedure.
    5. Act as the second assisting technologist, supporting the surgeon and/or first assistant by performing technical tasks without suturing or inserting instruments into body cavities.
  • Ensure the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and safety within the surgical environment.
  • Stay informed about current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Participate in in-service training, committees, and other professional development activities.
  • Serve as a mentor to new associates and students.

Qualifications:
Work Experience:
* Preferred - Previous experience as a surgical technologist

Education:
* Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
* BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
* High School Diploma or GED.
* Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
* Preferred - Associate's degree.

Skills and Knowledge:
* Proficient in the use of various surgical instruments and equipment.
* Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.
* Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of patients served in the assigned area.

Department Overview: The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing General Surgery department features 20 state-of-the-art surgical suites, offering services for both minor and major surgical procedures, including open-heart surgeries and major trauma cases. The surgical specialties encompass neuro, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, orthopedic, plastic, ENT, pediatric, general, gynecological, genitourinary, and da Vinci robotic surgeries. The patient demographics served include neonates, children, adults, and seniors.
