Job Overview:

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff in providing exceptional care to patients within the operating room environment.


Key Responsibilities:

This job description outlines the essential duties regularly assigned to this position. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by leadership as needed. Leadership reserves the right to modify or adjust the duties of the role.

  • Maintain proficiency in aseptic techniques.
  • Assist the circulating nurse in preparing for surgical procedures and managing turnovers between operations.
  • Set up sterile fields for surgical interventions, ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are ready for use.
  • During surgical procedures, the technologist will: 1) Anticipate the surgeon's needs and provide instruments and supplies, 2) Collaborate with the circulating nurse for counts, 3) Handle specimens in accordance with established protocols, 4) Ensure proper care of instruments and supplies post-procedure, and 5) Serve as the second assisting technologist, performing technical tasks without suturing, clamping, dissecting, or inserting instruments into body cavities.
  • Ensure the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and safety standards within the environment.
  • Stay informed about current trends in surgical practices and instrumentation.
  • Participate in in-service training, committees, and other professional development activities.
  • Act as a mentor to new associates and students.
Qualifications:

Work Experience:
* Preferred - Previous experience as a surgical technologist

Education:
* Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
* BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
* High School Diploma or GED.
* Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
* Preferred - Associate's degree.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
* Proficient in the use of various surgical instruments and equipment.
* Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.
* Ability to demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served in the assigned area.
Department Overview:

The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing General Surgery department features 20 state-of-the-art surgical suites, providing services for both minor and major surgical procedures, including open-heart surgeries and major trauma cases. The surgical specialties encompass neuro, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, orthopedic, plastic, ENT, pediatric, general, gynecological, genitourinary, and da Vinci robotic surgeries. The patient demographic includes neonates, children, adults, and elderly individuals.
