Responsibilities

Position Overview: The Senior Structural Engineer is primarily accountable for overseeing and providing technical guidance to a team of engineers and designers while acting as the lead engineer. Key responsibilities include ensuring the timely delivery of civil/structural outputs and services, adhering to performance budgets, and meeting quality standards. This role may involve conducting advanced engineering tasks and serving as a technical expert for intricate engineering projects. The position demands extensive progressive experience in civil/structural engineering and requires the application of project controls for cost, schedule, and quality management. Work will be performed with minimal supervision.

Key Duties Include:

Evaluating and endorsing all civil/structural outputs. Confirming professional service and construction estimates at project inception and monitoring adjustments throughout the project lifecycle. Generating professional service estimates in line with departmental standards for project deliverables, studies, change notices, and new work proposals. Defining design criteria that integrate client specifications, estimate and/or scope basis, and design basis in compliance with applicable regulations and codes. Understanding project scope and deliverables, initiating timely change notices for any deviations impacting schedule, deliverables, or costs. Organizing and planning team activities, effectively communicating plans to team members, project leadership, and clients. Maintaining project control by tracking performance against budget, schedule commitments, and quality benchmarks, utilizing established project management tools. Assigning tasks to engineers and designers based on their technical expertise and experience, providing necessary support to ensure efficient progress and quality. Collaborating with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure efficient progress and quality. Producing preliminary designs and material take-offs appropriate for the level of project estimation. Developing conceptual layouts and cost analyses to identify the most effective solutions for engineering challenges. Familiarity with and adherence to departmental design and drafting standards. Generating detailed design calculations and sketches for construction materials associated with projects, ensuring clarity and organization for efficient review and use by drafters/designers. Designing projects with optimal use of construction materials, emphasizing ease of construction and alignment with client expectations. Reviewing calculations by other engineers to ensure accuracy and compliance with codes and good engineering practices. Creating construction specifications. Monitoring ongoing drawings to ensure alignment with design calculations and specifications. Assisting the drafting team in resolving routine layout and detailing issues, ensuring adequate sketches and details are provided for engineering drawings. Reviewing vendor drawings and other discipline inputs for civil/structural considerations. Developing bid packages for civil/structural procurement inquiries. Engaging in the planning of training programs and professional development opportunities for staff. Leading teams of varying sizes to coordinate civil/structural efforts, maintaining focus on scope, schedule, and budget. Identifying and creating work-sharing packages for interoffice support, ensuring effective communication and execution within scope, schedule, and budget.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution is required, with structural coursework essential for structural engineering roles.

Registration: Professional registration is highly preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 15 years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural engineering is required.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Understanding of specifications and installation details for construction materials and equipment. Ability to produce accurate civil/structural documents based on vendor equipment drawings. Proficiency in estimating task completion accurately. Capability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for projects. Ability to determine quantities of construction materials. Development of design criteria and scope of work. Experience in estimating and scheduling professional service hours, assessing progress and quality of civil/structural work. Comprehensive understanding of the skills and experience necessary for engineering and design functions. Knowledge of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards. Proficiency in CAD software, such as AutoCAD or Microstation. Ability to lead teams to fulfill commitments. Skill in delivering compelling presentations of Hargrove Engineers + Constructors services. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to develop virtual team skills and relationships, providing interoffice execution leadership and support.
