Key Responsibilities

Position Overview: The Senior Structural Engineer will oversee and provide technical guidance to a team of engineers and designers while acting as the lead engineer. This role encompasses the comprehensive delivery of civil/structural outputs and services, ensuring they are completed on schedule, within budget, and meet quality standards. Responsibilities may include conducting advanced engineering tasks and serving as a technical expert for intricate engineering projects. This position demands extensive progressive experience in civil/structural engineering and involves the application of project controls for cost, schedule, and quality management. The work will be conducted with minimal supervision.

Core Duties Include, but are not Limited to:

Reviewing and endorsing all civil/structural outputs. Validating service and construction estimates at project inception and monitoring changes throughout the project lifecycle. Generating professional service estimates in line with departmental standards for project deliverables, studies, and proposals. Establishing design criteria that incorporate client specifications, scope, and applicable regulations, ensuring all permitting requirements are communicated to the project team. Understanding project scope and deliverables, initiating timely change notices when deviations occur that impact schedule, deliverables, or costs. Planning and coordinating the work of your team, effectively communicating the plan to team members, project leadership, and clients. Maintaining project control by tracking discipline performance against budget, schedule commitments, and quality benchmarks. Delegating tasks to engineers and designers based on their skills and experience, while providing support to ensure efficient progress and quality. Collaborating with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure effective progress and quality. Producing preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for the project estimate level. Developing conceptual layouts and cost analyses to identify the most efficient solutions for engineering challenges. Familiarity with and adherence to departmental design and drafting standards. Generating detailed design calculations and sketches for construction materials associated with the project. Creating project designs that optimize the use of construction materials while ensuring client expectations are met. Reviewing calculations performed by other engineers for accuracy and compliance with codes and specifications. Producing construction specifications. Monitoring drawings to ensure they align with design calculations and specifications. Assisting the drafting team in resolving layout and detailing issues. Reviewing vendor and other discipline drawings for civil/structural considerations. Creating bid packages for civil/structural procurement inquiries. Participating in the planning of training programs and professional development opportunities for staff. Leading teams of varying sizes to coordinate civil/structural efforts, maintaining focus on scope, schedule, and budget. Identifying and developing work-sharing packages for interoffice collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution is required, with structural coursework necessary for structural engineering roles.

Registration: Professional registration is highly desirable.

Experience: A minimum of 15 years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural engineering is required.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction materials and equipment. Ability to create accurate civil/structural documents from vendor equipment drawings. Proficiency in estimating task completion accurately. Ability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for projects. Competence in determining construction material quantities. Development of design criteria and scope of work. Experienced in estimating and scheduling professional service hours while assessing progress and quality of civil/structural work. Comprehensive understanding of the skills and experience required for engineering and design functions. Knowledge of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards. Proficiency in CAD software, such as AutoCAD or Microstation. Ability to lead teams to fulfill commitments. Capability to deliver compelling presentations of Hargrove Engineers + Constructors services. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong virtual team skills and the ability to provide interoffice execution leadership.
