Responsibilities

Position Overview: As a lead engineer, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing and providing technical guidance to a team of engineers and designers. Your duties will encompass the comprehensive delivery of civil/structural outputs and services, ensuring they are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the expected quality standards. This role requires advanced engineering expertise and involves the application of project controls to manage costs, timelines, and quality. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Reviewing and endorsing all civil/structural outputs.
  • Validating service and construction estimates at project inception and monitoring changes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Generating service estimates in line with departmental standards for project deliverables, studies, and proposals.
  • Establishing design criteria that incorporate client specifications and comply with relevant standards and codes.
  • Understanding project scope and deliverables, initiating timely change notices when deviations occur.
  • Planning and coordinating team activities, effectively communicating plans to team members and project leadership.
  • Maintaining project control by tracking budget performance, schedule commitments, and quality standards.
  • Delegating tasks to engineers and designers based on their skills and experience, ensuring efficient progress and quality.
  • Collaborating with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure project alignment and quality.
  • Producing preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for project estimates.
  • Developing conceptual layouts and cost analyses to determine efficient engineering solutions.
  • Adhering to departmental design and drafting standards.
  • Creating detailed design calculations and sketches for construction materials.
  • Ensuring project designs optimize construction materials while meeting client expectations.
  • Reviewing calculations from other engineers for accuracy and compliance.
  • Drafting construction specifications.
  • Monitoring drawings to ensure they align with design calculations and specifications.
  • Assisting the drafting team in resolving layout and detailing issues.
  • Reviewing vendor and discipline drawings for civil/structural considerations.
  • Preparing bid packages for procurement of materials or subcontract pricing.
  • Participating in training program planning and professional development initiatives for staff.
  • Leading teams to coordinate civil/structural efforts, ensuring focus on scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Identifying and developing work-sharing packages for interoffice collaboration.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution is required, with structural coursework essential for this position.

Registration: Professional registration is highly preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in civil/structural engineering is required.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of specifications and installation details for construction materials and equipment.
  • Ability to create accurate civil/structural documents from vendor drawings.
  • Proficiency in estimating task completion accurately.
  • Experience in developing construction cost estimates and engineering schedules.
  • Capability to determine material quantities for construction.
  • Development of design criteria and scope of work.
  • Proficient in estimating and scheduling professional service hours.
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering and design functions.
  • Familiarity with company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software, including AutoCAD and Microstation.
  • Strong leadership skills to ensure commitments are met.
  • Ability to deliver effective presentations of Hargrove services.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong virtual team collaboration skills.

Physical Requirements
