Key Responsibilities

Position Overview: As a Lead Structural Engineer, you will oversee and provide technical guidance to a team of engineers and designers. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the timely delivery of civil/structural outputs and services while adhering to performance budgets and quality standards. This role involves undertaking advanced engineering tasks and serving as a technical expert for complex assignments, requiring significant progressive experience in civil/structural engineering and effective project control management for cost, schedule, and quality. Minimal supervision will be provided for this role.

Your main duties will include, but are not limited to:

Evaluating and approving all civil/structural outputs. Validating service and construction estimates at project initiation and monitoring changes throughout the project lifecycle. Creating professional service estimates in line with departmental standards for project deliverables, studies, change notices, and proposal development. Establishing design criteria that meet client requirements and applicable standards, ensuring all permitting needs are communicated to the project team. Understanding project scope and deliverables, initiating timely change notices for any deviations affecting schedule, deliverables, or costs. Planning and organizing team activities, clearly communicating plans to your team, project leadership, and clients. Maintaining project control by tracking performance against budget, schedule commitments, and quality standards, utilizing available project management tools. Delegating tasks to engineers and designers based on their skills and experience, providing support to ensure efficient progress and quality. Collaborating with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure efficient project execution. Producing preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for project estimates. Developing conceptual layouts and cost analyses to identify the most efficient engineering solutions. Adhering to departmental design and drafting standards. Creating detailed design calculations and sketches for construction materials, ensuring clarity for review and use by drafters/designers. Delivering project designs that optimize construction materials while meeting client expectations. Reviewing calculations from other engineers for accuracy and compliance with standards. Drafting construction specifications. Monitoring ongoing drawings to ensure alignment with design calculations and specifications. Assisting the drafting team in resolving layout and detailing challenges. Reviewing vendor and other discipline drawings for civil/structural input. Creating bid packages for procurement of materials or subcontract pricing. Participating in training program planning and the professional development of staff. Leading teams of varying sizes to coordinate civil/structural efforts while maintaining focus on scope, schedule, and budget. Identifying and developing work-sharing packages for interoffice support, ensuring effective communication and execution within scope, schedule, and budget.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution is required, with structural coursework essential for this position.

Registration: Professional registration is highly desirable.

Experience: A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in civil/structural engineering is required.

Essential Skills and Competencies

Familiarity with specifications and installation details for construction materials and equipment. Ability to create precise civil/structural documents from vendor equipment drawings. Proficiency in estimating task completion accurately. Capability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for projects. Competence in determining construction material quantities. Experience in developing design criteria and scopes of work. Proven track record in estimating and scheduling professional service hours and assessing civil/structural work quality. Comprehensive understanding of the skills necessary for engineering and design functions. Knowledge of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards. Proficiency in CAD software, including AutoCAD and/or Microstation. Strong leadership skills to ensure delivery on commitments. Ability to deliver compelling presentations of Hargrove Engineers + Constructors services. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to develop virtual team relationships and provide interoffice execution leadership.

Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
