Compensation

$113,500.00-$156,100.00 Annually

This salary range represents the expected compensation for new hires, with variations based on relevant experience, skills, and education. Additionally, this role is eligible for an incentive bonus.

Position Summary:

The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for overseeing all technical and commercial dimensions of substantial and intricate investment initiatives. Projects must be executed safely, punctually, within budget, and according to the defined scope and functionality. Active collaboration and communication with project stakeholders, including plant managers and business leaders, are essential to ensure alignment throughout all project phases. Typical project budgets range from $0.5M to $5M, encompassing various unit operations such as material handling, abatement systems, utilities, and electrical controls.

Key responsibilities include defining equipment and work specifications, developing schedules, budgets, and forecasts, selecting materials, equipment, project resources, and contractors, and ensuring thorough technical and commercial reviews of all design aspects for scope, safety, quality, and functionality.

The role involves leading a cross-functional project team that typically includes plant personnel, discipline engineers, procurement specialists, and external engineering contractors. Reporting to the project steering team, the Senior Project Engineer will receive guidance and support at various project stages.

Daily Responsibilities:

Manage investment projects with budgets ranging from $0.5M to $5M, characterized by medium to high complexity, following the CPP process and requirements outlined below:
  • Develop, guide, review, and present project feasibility studies and business cases that accurately identify project benefits, risks, and returns while managing multiple project assignments and driving them to completion.
  • Estimate costs, resources, and timeframes for approved projects.
  • Facilitate the exploration of options to determine the most optimal technical solutions that align with cost/performance improvements defined in the business case.
  • Incorporate Lessons Learned into design considerations.
  • Evaluate vendors in close collaboration with procurement to assess cost/performance and determine sourcing plans according to the project RACI.
  • Provide comprehensive project management and oversight for all phases of multiple concurrent project assignments, ensuring successful completion.
  • Review Mechanical and/or Electrical Controls detailed engineering for all project aspects.
  • Ensure adherence to technical specifications and contracts for equipment and services across all project dimensions.
  • Coordinate, review, and manage external engineering resources and consultants as necessary.
  • Prepare bid request documentation, supplier lists, bid evaluations, and make purchasing recommendations.
  • Design safe processes and specify safe equipment, ensuring ergonomic considerations are integrated into all design areas and that potential safety and health hazards are identified and mitigated during project execution.
  • Design and specify environmentally compliant equipment and processes, ensuring all permit requirements are addressed in the design, and that potential environmental issues are identified and managed during project execution.
  • Prepare, review, deliver, and implement necessary training for maintenance and operations personnel regarding the project.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety policies and procedures, promoting a zero-incident project environment.
  • Collaborate with Engineering Leaders and Procurement to assess potential engineering firms and contractors.
  • Maintain effective communication with management and project stakeholders regarding project status, challenges, and changes.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles to all aspects of design and project execution.
  • Organize, document, and archive project documentation effectively.
  • Maintain a continuous lesson learned logbook throughout the project and conduct analysis post-project completion.
  • Communicate results within the engineering team to support ongoing improvement efforts.
  • Work proactively with process engineers, production, and maintenance departments to address process and equipment challenges and identify improvement opportunities based on collaborative performance reviews.
  • Provide engineering insights for enhanced automation and product packaging opportunities.
  • Stay updated on trends in technology and equipment design by attending industry trade shows and exhibitions.
  • Mentor and coach project staff and the assigned operations team, assisting them in problem-solving and achieving company, division, and departmental goals.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (chemical, electrical, or mechanical) with a minimum of 7 years of engineering experience in an industrial or continuous manufacturing environment.
  • Strong project management capabilities for projects up to $5M.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Robust problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven drive and initiative to complete assigned tasks and seek improvement opportunities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment with limited guidance.
  • Effective at interfacing with all organizational levels, both internally and externally.
  • Leads project teams to achieve milestones and objectives by establishing priorities and providing direction.
  • Experience managing contractors and subcontractors, including the bidding process.
  • Experience in preparing estimates, schedules, and project deliverables.
  • Experience in developing project justifications and business cases.
  • Proven negotiation skills and change management experience.
  • Solid understanding of contract design and legal requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with project scheduling software (MS Project, Primavera).
  • Exposure to SAP systems is advantageous.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (40%-60%).
  • Work environment typical of a manufacturing facility, with potential exposure to various environmental conditions.
