The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution established by the US Congress. About the Role
The Museum shop offers visitors a range of memorabilia related to the Holocaust and other significant events, including books, postcards, and videos. This retail space plays a crucial role in the Museum's mission by helping visitors commemorate their experiences.
The Sales Associate position is based in the Museum Shop and reports to the Office of Finance. The individual in this role is responsible for processing customer transactions, which may occur on-site, via purchase order, over the phone, or through mail orders. Additionally, the Sales Associate provides information to customers and ensures that shelves and supplies are well-stocked and organized to meet customer needs.
Work Schedule
This position requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week on a rotating schedule, offering varied work and off days. The role necessitates in-person service, and telework is not an option.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist customers and operate a cash register to facilitate sales transactions.
- Utilize cash register functions to process payments via cash, credit card, personal checks, or traveler's checks.
- Verify customer identification and signatures as necessary.
- Apply discounts for donors, members, employees, or volunteers as appropriate.
- Handle refunds and voided transactions while explaining store policies.
- Maintain sufficient funds for change and ensure adequate stock of cash register supplies.
- Safeguard financial instruments and ensure accuracy in cash handling.
- Generate cash register reports and perform reconciliations.
- Keep inventory knowledge current and assist customers in locating items.
- Provide information about store policies and general Museum inquiries.
- Recommend products to customers based on their requests.
- Address customer issues and relay suggestions for additional stock.
- Monitor security of assets and inventory throughout the day.
- Restock shelves and ensure an organized sales floor.
- Manage telephone inquiries and direct calls as needed.
- Process mail orders efficiently.
- Identify and communicate any sales issues to customers or supervisors.
- Prepare shipping labels and coordinate with shipping staff as necessary.
- Collect customer information for mailing lists and assist with other tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of experience in a retail sales environment.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Familiarity with POS systems and proficient cash-handling abilities.
- Highly responsible, reliable, and detail-oriented.
- Self-motivated and able to multitask effectively.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient in computer use and quick data entry.
- Respect for teamwork and flexibility in considering colleagues' input.
Preferred Qualifications
- Availability for a rotating work schedule.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Interest in the cultural heritage sector.
