The **Retail Sales Specialist** plays a crucial role in the daily operations of the Museum Shop. This position involves assisting visitors with their shopping experience, delivering exceptional customer service, and promoting the sale of art-themed products. The part-time sales specialist will significantly contribute to enhancing the visitor experience while supporting the museum's mission of celebrating women artists. This role provides a unique chance to interact with art lovers and assist the museum's initiatives on a flexible schedule. The position reports to the Director of Retail Operations and does not have any direct reports.
This is a part-time role (3 days per week, totaling 18-32 hours/week). The schedule is flexible and can be discussed.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Welcome and engage museum visitors warmly, offering assistance and information regarding shop offerings and museum displays.
- Promote and suggest museum shop items that align with visitors' interests and enhance their overall experience.
- Articulate product features and advantages to drive sales and help meet revenue objectives.
- Assist customers in locating specific products, sizes, or variations, ensuring a tailored shopping experience.
- Accurately operate the cash register, handling transactions and payments in a friendly and efficient manner.
- Keep the shop clean and organized, restocking shelves and arranging displays to attract customer attention.
- Stay informed about museum exhibitions and events to provide visitors with relevant insights.
- Share knowledge about the historical and artistic significance of museum merchandise, enriching customers' understanding.
- Address customer inquiries and concerns professionally, seeking solutions to ensure satisfaction.
- Collaborate effectively with team members to achieve sales goals and maintain a cohesive shop environment.
- Process incoming merchandise shipments, ensuring accurate inventory management.
- Assist in periodic inventory counts, contributing to stock management and replenishment efforts.
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in retail or customer service is preferred. A passion for art, history, and cultural institutions, along with a genuine interest in promoting the museum, is advantageous. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Dependability and punctuality to ensure the museum shop operates as scheduled.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to provide excellent customer service and engage effectively with team members.
- Attention to detail and the ability to maintain an organized and visually appealing retail space.
- Experience with point-of-sale systems and technology for inventory management.
- Basic math skills for accurate transaction processing and cash handling.
- Comfort with e-commerce platforms and order processing systems, with the ability to adapt to new digital tools.
- Flexibility in scheduling, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings, to accommodate museum hours and events.
- Self-sufficiency in task execution and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and take direction from supervisors.
- Physical capability to stand for extended periods and lift/move merchandise as needed.
- Previous experience in a museum, cultural institution, or art-related environment is a plus.
