Director of the School of Music

The Society for Music Theory Inc invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the School of Music. The preferred rank at appointment is Professor. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the school's academic and administrative functions, including course assignments, instructional workload, and scheduling, as well as appointments, promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in teaching, scholarship, and administration
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the school's academic and administrative functions
  • Supervise and mentor faculty and staff
  • Manage budgets and financial resources
  • Represent the school in external relations and partnerships
Qualifications

Candidates must possess a Ph.D., M.F.A., D.M.A., or equivalent, and a demonstrated excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence and to support an open and inclusive environment among the diverse groups and disciplines within the school and across campus.

Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a letter outlining their vision for the future of the School of Music with specific plans for the implementation of that vision. The statement should include views on graduate education, undergraduate education, research and scholarship, community outreach, diversity and inclusion, staff relations, hiring and promotion, curricular and programmatic initiatives, and other issues of current concern before the department.
