Job Overview:

As a Senior General Ledger Accountant within the Division of Finance and General Accounting at the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will be part of a committed group of professionals dedicated to supporting the mission of safeguarding the lives of Georgia residents.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute job duties with minimal oversight.
  • Conduct daily and monthly reconciliations for bank accounts and sub-ledgers.
  • Perform reconciliations for federal, state, and other funding sources, including draw adjustments.
  • Complete weekly and monthly reconciliations of various funding sources.
  • Investigate variances and prepare necessary adjusting entries.
  • Review financial reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Carry out monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing activities.
  • Finalize assigned year-end financial reports within set deadlines.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and resource in your designated area.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of all entries in the financial system.
  • Prepare and review supporting documentation for all journal entries.
  • Assist in updating departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain organized files for supporting documentation and general ledger records.
  • Stay informed about State Accounting Office (SAO) policies and procedures relevant to your area.
  • Perform duties in compliance with established internal controls and guidelines.
  • Generate ad hoc reports as required.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

Technical Competencies:

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel (including Pivot Tables), along with strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.

Knowledge of general accounting principles and standards, as well as federal and state accounting policies and procedures.

Understanding of effective internal control systems.

Ability to prepare, analyze, and interpret spreadsheets and financial reports, effectively communicating results to management.

Capability to organize and present financial information in a clear and accessible format.


Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting along with two (2) years of relevant professional accounting experience; or two (2) years of experience in a lower-level Accountant position or equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong analytical and reconciliation skills.
  • Previous experience with federal grant awards.
  • Experience in the public sector or non-profit organizations.

Current State employees are subject to State Personnel Board regulations regarding salary.

The Georgia Department of Public Health accepts educational credentials recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE).
