As a Senior General Ledger Accountant within the Division of Finance and General Accounting at the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will be part of a committed group of public health professionals dedicated to supporting the mission of protecting the lives of Georgian residents.

Key Responsibilities:

Overview:
Execute accounting functions for the general ledger section within the Division of Finance, Office of Financial Services. Act as a liaison between the general ledger section and other divisions within the Department.

Responsibilities Include:
  1. Performing job duties with minimal oversight.
  2. Conducting daily and monthly reconciliations for bank accounts and sub-ledgers.
  3. Executing reconciliations for federal, state, and other funding sources, including draw adjustments.
  4. Completing weekly and monthly reconciliations of various funding sources.
  5. Investigating variances and preparing necessary adjusting entries.
  6. Reviewing financial reports for accuracy and completeness.
  7. Completing monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes.
  8. Finalizing assigned year-end financial reports within set deadlines.
  9. Serving as a subject matter expert and resource within the organization.
  10. Ensuring timely and accurate processing of all entries in the financial system.
  11. Preparing and reviewing supporting documentation for all journal entries.
  12. Assisting in updating departmental policies and procedures.
  13. Maintaining organized files for supporting documentation and general ledger records.
  14. Staying informed about State Accounting Office (SAO) policies and procedures relevant to the assigned area.
  15. Ensuring compliance with established internal controls and guidelines.
  16. Preparing ad hoc reports as required.
  17. Performing other duties as assigned.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel (including Pivot Tables), with strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Knowledgeable in general accounting principles and standards.
  • Familiar with federal and state accounting policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of effective internal control systems.
  • Adept at preparing, analyzing, and interpreting financial reports and effectively communicating results to management.
  • Capable of organizing and presenting financial information in a clear and comprehensible manner.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting with two (2) years of relevant professional accounting experience; or two (2) years of experience in a lower-level accounting position or equivalent role.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong analytical and reconciliation skills.
  • Experience with federal grant awards.
  • Background in public sector or non-profit finance.
