Ferry Chief Engineer Job Description

Are you a skilled marine engineer looking for a challenging role in transportation systems management? We are seeking a highly qualified Ferry Chief Engineer to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation, Hampton Roads District, Jamestown Scotland Ferry.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and monitor main engines and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels to ensure safety of passengers, crew, and property.
  • Perform minor repairs to all systems, maintain vessel readiness for USCG inspections, and record keeping.
  • Ensure accurate fuel readings, maintain ship's engineering log, and maintain records of machinery usage and readings.
  • Be alert to security violations and suspicious behavior during shift, respond appropriately to emergency situations, and ensure engine room security doors are closed and secure at all times.
  • Provide information and assistance to passengers, resolve issues in a professional manner, and work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge and ability to operate and monitor main engines and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels.
  • Knowledge of United States Coast Guard regulations governing ferry operations.
  • Ability to train others, diagnose and repair primary and ancillary systems on the ferry, and read and interpret gauges, schematics, and manuals.
  • Ability to complete and maintain records and reports, hold a minimum of MMC-endorsed as a Chief Engineer of motor vessels of at least 3000 H.P., and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Valid driver's license and skill in the use of hand and power tools.

We offer a competitive salary range of $71,414 to $116,048 and a sign-on bonus of up to $10,000 based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.
