Job Overview

SUMMARY: The Culinary Operations Supervisor at Nevada City School of the Arts (NCSOTA) collaborates with the Nourish NCSA team to manage all facets of kitchen operations, ensuring the prompt and effective preparation of healthy meals for students, staff, and faculty. This role involves leading a team of kitchen personnel, overseeing inventory management, planning orders, and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations within the Building 9 Kitchen.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Kitchen Management:

  • Oversee and coordinate daily kitchen functions, including meal preparation, cooking, and assembly. Act as the supervisory presence in the absence of the Food Services Coordinator.
  • Facilitate communication among all Nourish Team members to ensure timely and accurate information exchange.
  • Supervise the preparation of standardized recipes and portion sizes to uphold quality consistency.
  • Engage in menu development alongside the Food Services Coordinator and Procurement Coordinator, utilizing food surpluses and leftovers effectively.
  • Ensure the kitchen's cleanliness and organization, maintaining compliance with sanitation standards and regulations.
  • Train and supervise Nourish Team members in proper inventory management and rotation practices, maintaining a comprehensive understanding of inventory at all times.
  • Manage maintenance and repair schedules for kitchen equipment, supervising operations during shifts to ensure cleanliness and proper equipment usage.
  • Possess the ability to perform basic mathematical operations and interpret various documents related to safety and operational procedures.
  • Effectively solve practical problems and navigate diverse variables in various situations.
  • Interpret a range of instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or electronic formats.

Staff Recruitment and Development:

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise kitchen staff, including chefs, cooks, and food service assistants.
  • Collaborate with the Food Services Coordinator to assign shifts and responsibilities to Nourish Team members, ensuring seamless operations during meal periods.
  • Conduct performance assessments, provide constructive feedback, and implement training initiatives to enhance staff skills and performance.
  • Foster a supportive work environment that values diversity and inclusivity.

Health and Safety Compliance:

  • Ensure adherence to all health and safety regulations, including food handling, sanitation, and hygiene standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the kitchen and equipment to identify and rectify any safety hazards or violations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of food safety inspections, temperature logs, and sanitation practices.
  • Promote a culture of excellence and equity by ensuring that all employees and students feel valued and respected.
  • Establish and nurture positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including students, staff, school administration, parents, and community members.
  • Report any unsafe working conditions promptly.
  • Adhere to all guidelines outlined in the NCSOTA Employee Handbook.
  • Complete mandatory training within the specified timeframe upon employment and annually thereafter.
  • Perform additional duties as required or assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and work diligently.
  • Proven experience in a high-volume kitchen environment, preferably within a school or institutional context.
  • Strong culinary skills and knowledge of scratch cooking techniques, food preparation methods, and kitchen equipment operation.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal abilities, with a capacity to motivate and manage a diverse team.
  • Understanding of nutrition principles, dietary guidelines, and allergy management practices.
  • Familiarity with food safety regulations and certification in food handling and sanitation (e.g., ServSafe).
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for effective kitchen operations, menu management, and inventory oversight.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • A Bachelor's degree in culinary arts, food service management, nutrition, or a related field is preferred.
