Position Overview: The California Coastal Commission is seeking a dedicated professional to engage in the strategic planning and oversight of development along California's dynamic North Central Coast. This role is based in the North Central Coast District Office and involves ensuring compliance with the California Coastal Act across various jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Local Coastal Program and coastal permit-related activities of the North Central Coast District team, ensuring timely completion of all tasks.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of complex coastal permit applications and Local Coastal Program submissions, preparing comprehensive reports for the Coastal Commission's review.
  • Ensure adherence to the conditions and stipulations of coastal development permits.
  • Monitor and evaluate the coastal regulatory and planning initiatives of local jurisdictions, providing feedback on proposed developments and assisting local planners with Coastal Act and Local Coastal Program interpretations.
  • Collaborate with District and Statewide Enforcement teams to address violations of the Coastal Act and coastal permits, contributing to the formulation of resolution strategies.
  • Act as a resource for permit applicants and the public regarding the Commission's regulatory and planning initiatives.
  • Offer guidance to local government planning and regulatory personnel concerning Local Coastal Program compliance and execution.
  • Proactively identify and address challenges related to Local Coastal Program interpretation and implementation.
  • Collect data and generate reports on various aspects pertinent to the Coastal Commission's objectives.
  • Provide direct supervision to coastal planners and ensure effective workflow.
  • Maintain and update information in the Commission's database.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Proficient in supervisory techniques with the ability to effectively plan, motivate, and organize team efforts.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Coastal Act, environmental impact assessments, and land use planning in California, including the implementation of Local Coastal Programs.
  • Familiarity with the roles and interactions of federal, state, regional, county, and city governments, as well as special districts.
  • Strong analytical skills with the capacity to explore innovative solutions and develop sound policy positions.
  • Exceptional communication abilities, including the skill to produce accurate and concise reports and correspondence.
  • Experience with environmental justice issues and/or tribal consultation is a plus.
