Position Overview: The California Coastal Commission is seeking a dedicated professional to engage in the planning and oversight of development along California's dynamic North Central Coast. This role is situated within the North Central Coast District Office, which is tasked with enforcing the California Coastal Act across several jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Local Coastal Program and coastal permit activities of District staff, ensuring timely completion of all tasks.
- Conduct in-depth analyses of complex coastal permit applications and Local Coastal Program submissions, preparing comprehensive reports for the Commission's review.
- Ensure compliance with coastal development permit conditions and terms.
- Monitor local jurisdictions' coastal regulatory and planning programs, providing input on proposed developments and assisting local planners with Coastal Act interpretations.
- Collaborate with enforcement staff to address violations of the Coastal Act and develop resolution strategies.
- Serve as a resource for permit applicants and the public regarding the Commission's regulatory frameworks.
- Advise local government planning staff on Local Coastal Program compliance and execution.
- Proactively identify and resolve issues related to Local Coastal Program implementation.
- Collect data and compile reports pertinent to the Commission's objectives.
- Supervise coastal planners, ensuring effective team management.
- Maintain and update information in the Commission's database.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Proven supervisory skills with the ability to effectively organize and motivate team members.
- In-depth knowledge of the Coastal Act, environmental impact assessments, and land use planning in California.
- Understanding of the roles and interactions among federal, state, regional, and local government entities.
- Strong analytical skills with the capacity to explore alternative solutions and formulate sound policy recommendations.
- Exceptional communication abilities, with a talent for drafting clear and concise reports and correspondence.
- Experience in environmental justice and/or tribal consultation is a plus.
