Job Title: Patient Access Representative

Job Summary:

The Patient Access Representative plays a vital role in creating a positive impression for patients, families, and staff while performing tasks such as identifying patients accurately, insurance verification, and collection of pre-service payment. This position ensures the integrity of the organization's master patient index and secure payment for services provided.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interview patients to collect demographic and financial information for regulatory compliance and billing purposes.
  • Schedule patient appointments, pre-register patients, verify insurance, collect payments, and assign ICD-10 codes.
  • Enter timely and accurate patient information in compliance with hospital policies and federal regulations.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and families, demonstrating empathy and understanding.
  • Assign ICD-10 codes for registration and billing purposes.
  • Obtain signatures and information as required by regulatory agencies while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and covered benefits using electronic systems or phone.
  • Refer uninsured and underinsured patients to the Financial Assistance Specialist for screening of assistance programs.
  • Educate patients on their financial responsibility and collect prepayment for uncovered services.
  • Operate multiple computer applications to register patients, schedule appointments, and retrieve information.
  • Serve as a liaison between Patient Access and other departments to obtain required data or escalate issues.
  • Work exception accounts and rejected claims for errors related to registration.
  • Cross-train to support various Patient Access areas with minimal supervision.
Requirements:
  • Member of National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) - preferred
  • Certified CHAM or CHAA - preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of healthcare office experience or similar setting
  • High School Diploma or GED or successful completion of 12 grades combined with continued enrollment in early college program
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Maintains strict adherence to patient confidentiality
  • Typing test at 35 words per minute or data entry test at 7000 keystrokes per hour
  • Customer service skills assessment testing with 85% or greater
  • Analytical skills assessment testing with 70% or greater
