Position Overview

Burns & McDonnell is in search of a Railway Engineering Project Lead to enhance our expanding Transportation Practice. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional client engagement abilities and the capacity to oversee and direct planning and design teams for engineering initiatives both regionally and nationally.

Key Responsibilities

As a pivotal member of a seller/doer team, you will oversee all facets of railroad and transit engineering projects, encompassing business development, scope and fee formulation, staffing strategy, project management, quality assurance, and financial accountability. A significant focus will be on steering rail industrial development projects to fruition.

Responsibilities include:

  • Upholding Burns & McDonnell's safety protocols, training, and policies while fostering and managing the Safety & Health performance of project teams and subcontractors.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians in the design and evaluation of rail engineering projects, as well as with contractors and construction personnel on design/build assignments.
  • Providing leadership and direction across various project dimensions, including safety, quality, engineering, procurement, construction, environmental compliance, project oversight, and community relations.
  • Developing new client relationships and maintaining existing ones while engaging with clients on proposals and project-related matters.
  • Leading internal and external project risk assessments and consulting with the Legal Department as necessary.
  • Client development, management, and contract negotiation; coordination with regulatory bodies; project planning, budgeting, and scheduling; and establishing critical project goals and performance metrics.
  • Organizing and communicating project personnel requirements to department and section management.
  • Mentoring junior staff on technical project aspects.
  • Serving as a leader in advancing the latest technologies in rail engineering and transportation planning.
  • Directing project planning, budgeting, and setting essential project objectives.
  • Analyzing and conveying project status, risks, schedules, and costs to all stakeholders.
  • Managing downstream contract administration, including requests for information (RFIs), submittals, change management, contract closeout, and claims mitigation.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience (15 years preferred), including at least 5 years in the development or management of rail engineering or architectural projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in managing rail industrial development design-build projects is preferred.
  • The ability to collaborate with existing and prospective clients to identify new projects and effectively communicate our capabilities to secure consulting services.
  • Proficiency in leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with effective presentation abilities.
  • The capacity to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines while managing multiple concurrent projects, including identifying critical path items to ensure timely deliverables.
  • A focus on the overall picture to provide effective services that meet client needs, coupled with the ability to identify and analyze critical project details.
  • A willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs and market demands evolve.
  • A readiness to develop a diverse range of service offerings to adapt to growing market opportunities.
  • A commitment to cross-selling other services offered by Burns & McDonnell beyond the project manager's core services.
  • The ability to engage with various business contacts to understand their needs and translate them into a comprehensive scope of work.
  • Knowledge of rail engineering methodologies and standards.
  • Familiarity with engineering software such as MicroStation, OpenRail, Geopak, Inroads, or equivalent design/production software.
  • Experience working with rail clients.
