Chief Security Officer

This role is designated as the Chief Security Officer within the Veterans Health Administration. The incumbent will oversee the strategic management and execution of law enforcement and physical security operations, ensuring the safety and protection of all assets, information, facilities, and personnel associated with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Eligibility Criteria
- Current federal employees of the Veterans Affairs Administration.
This position is exclusively available to permanent employees of the Veterans Affairs Administration.
Key Responsibilities
Essential duties include:
- Developing and assigning work objectives to subordinate supervisors for new or modified programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Addressing and resolving employee grievances and complaints, while reviewing serious disciplinary matters.
- Ensuring that security personnel receive adequate training on various equipment and security systems.
- Interpreting and advising on security policies and procedures to senior leadership and program managers.
- Keeping senior management informed about program achievements and areas of concern.
- Collaborating with various leaders to address issues and resource requirements.
- Acting as a liaison and subject matter expert with federal law enforcement agencies.
- Assisting in the formulation and adjustment of policies aimed at enhancing relationships between Veterans and law enforcement.
- Maintaining accountability for the civil rights of all individuals on VA-controlled premises.
- Establishing and implementing protocols for detaining or arresting individuals suspected of criminal activities.
- Directing and updating crime prevention initiatives and overseeing investigations into criminal behavior.
- Managing the procurement and accountability of security equipment and firearms.
- Performing additional related duties as necessary.
Conditions of Employment
- Must achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification.
- New officers are required to complete an 8-week training course at the designated training center.
- Must possess a valid State driver's license and demonstrate safe driving practices.
- Successful completion of physical and psychological evaluations is mandatory.
- Individuals with a domestic violence conviction are ineligible for this position.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements as specified in the announcement.
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, which includes managing police security programs, assessing situations, and ensuring the safety of staff and visitors.
Physical Requirements: The role requires significant physical exertion and the ability to perform essential functions under various conditions.
