Job Summary

The City of New York is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives to join our team. This is a critical role that will support the development and implementation of long-term neighborhood-based crime-reduction strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as primary point of contact for interagency violence prevention projects, including the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
  • Manage a portfolio of violence prevention initiatives, including neighborhood space activation projects based on a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) model.
  • Represent the Office of Neighborhood Safety at meetings with community-based, governmental, and business entities.
  • Support the development and implementation of Neighborhood Safety Councils in high-priority neighborhoods.
  • Cultivate and maintain excellent relationships with stakeholder groups, other government agencies, community non-profits, advocates, family members, survivors, and justice-impacted individuals.
  • Build relationships connecting key partners to the ONS work, including by building strong working relationships with relevant non-profits and community organizations that can serve as partners in transforming the lives of individuals and communities supported by ONS services.
Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties described above.
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above.
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree Preferred (social service, public administration, or related human service field).
  • Academic and/or professional experience in program planning, monitoring, and project management, data management and research, community organizing, youth programming, planning, policymaking, criminal justice, and/or organizational development.
  • 5 years of project management, administrative or supervisory experience.
  • Extensive experience working with community organizations or other neighborhood-based constituencies.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, problem solve, prioritize duties, balance competing priorities, work independently and with teams in a fast-paced environment, pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including ability to present at meetings with community leaders, city officials and other governmental and private entities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to think creatively and work independently in addressing ad hoc requests.
  • Knowledge of systemic inequities in the criminal justice system and ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies.
  • Effective and creative leadership ability with the capacity to work both independently and cooperatively.
  • Experience in mediating among groups with competing perspectives, overseeing and improving the operational efficiency of complicated organizations, and pioneering innovative solutions to intricate problems.
  • Familiarity with the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and intermediate Excel (including functions and pivot tables), Google Suite.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
