We are seeking a Financial Operations Supervisor within the Controller's Office, who will be an integral part of the University Administration leadership team. This role involves providing direction, oversight, and management to support the objectives of the Controller's Office. The individual will plan, organize, and oversee a functional unit or key projects within the office. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills are essential to cultivate transparent and service-oriented relationships across the University.

The Supervisor will engage with senior and executive leadership, offering advice on accounting, finance, and business processes. This position may represent the University in various internal and external forums and will supervise complex, University-wide projects aimed at enhancing systems and business processes, while achieving significant institutional goals through a collaborative and consensus-driven approach.

Job Scope and Complexities

Business decisions at Johns Hopkins University are intricate and must consider the diverse clientele supported across the institution. This role requires advanced knowledge of accounting principles and adherence to government regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide critical information to senior leadership for strategic financial decision-making.
  • Assess the impact and effectiveness of business processes in alignment with institutional goals and culture.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements within the area of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with other financial leaders to interpret business needs and recommend strategic investments in processes, personnel, and technology.

Relationship Management

  • Represent the Controller's Office in administrative meetings within and outside the University.
  • Manage customer relationships effectively.
  • Promote high-quality services and support for all customers.
  • Encourage a collaborative and transparent environment.

Project and Financial System Oversight

  • Supervise initiatives aimed at improving business processes that meet customer needs and are vital for ongoing operations.
  • Ensure continuous delivery of customer support through oversight of service level agreements and financial quality control.

Staff Management

  • Oversee recruitment, development, mentoring, and retention of staff.
  • Recognize and reward teams of skilled financial professionals.
  • Implement an effective organizational structure that supports ongoing operations within the area of responsibility.

Major Responsibilities

  • Supervise post-award functions including award setup, closeout, financial reporting, and invoicing in compliance with federal regulations and University policies.
  • Manage workflow to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Deliver training programs for new and existing employees in sponsored projects.
  • Utilize advanced knowledge of the University's accounting systems for data analysis.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of relevant software and tools.
  • Act on behalf of the manager when necessary.
  • Assist in coordinating audits related to sponsored activities.
  • Ensure data integrity of the accounting system in accordance with regulations.
  • Provide excellent customer service and support to various stakeholders.
  • Train departmental administrators on sponsored policies and procedures.
  • Lead staff in identifying and implementing process improvements.
  • Stay informed about federal cost principles and administrative guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in a related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience as permitted by the equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, CPA, or MS in Finance preferred.
  • An advanced degree and/or CPA certification is strongly preferred.
