Accounting Supervisor

We are looking for a Supervisor within the Controllers Office, a key member of the University Administration leadership team. This role involves providing direction, oversight, and management to support the mission of the Controllers Office. The successful candidate will plan, organize, and manage essential functions or significant projects within the Controllers Office. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills are necessary to cultivate transparent and service-oriented relationships across the University.

In alignment with the University’s mission, the Supervisor will be responsible for the development, review, and implementation of policies and procedures relevant to their functional unit or task, ensuring compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • Provide insights to senior leadership for informed strategic financial decisions.
  • Evaluate the impact and effectiveness of business processes in relation to institutional goals and culture.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant JHU policies and regulatory requirements within the area of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with other financial leaders to interpret business needs and recommend strategic investments in processes, personnel, and technology.

Relationship Management

  • Act as a representative of the Controllers Office in administrative meetings both internally and externally.
  • Manage relationships with customers within and outside of JHU.
  • Deliver high-quality services and support to customers efficiently.
  • Encourage a collaborative and consensus-driven environment.

Project and Financial System Oversight

  • Supervise initiatives aimed at enhancing business processes to meet customer needs and support ongoing operations.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of customer support through effective management of service level agreements and financial quality control.

Staff Management

  • Oversee the recruitment, development, mentoring, and retention of staff.
  • Foster a team of highly qualified financial professionals.
  • Implement an effective organizational structure that supports the ongoing operations within the area of responsibility.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a related role.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, CPA, or MS in Finance is preferred.
  • An advanced degree in these fields and/or CPA certification is strongly favored.
