Surgical Services Technician

Overview:
This position involves a range of technical responsibilities aimed at assisting in the preparation and care of patients prior to surgical procedures. The role includes preparing the patient's skin for surgery in line with established hospital protocols. It is crucial to maintain sterile techniques and actively monitor for any potential breaches in these practices. Providing comfort and support to pre-operative patients is a key aspect, demonstrating sensitivity to their care and privacy. Responsibilities also include transporting patients to and from the surgical suite and positioning them appropriately based on the type of surgery. Additionally, the technician will identify and manage biological specimens and prepare the surgical environment by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies according to the specific case requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Adhere to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, which include being a Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the technician will perform all tasks related to direct patient care and assistance in the operating room before and during surgical procedures.
Proficiency in scrubbing for three or more specialty areas, such as Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, and Robotics, is highly desirable.
Establish and uphold a sterile field, passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, and assisting as directed.
Utilize the physician preference card as a foundational guide when preparing cases and setting up the operating room.Ensure that preference cards are regularly updated and comprehensive.
Collaborate effectively as part of the team responsible for patient care.
Engage in team planning and execution.
Maintain a safe environment by consistently implementing technical and sterile practices.
Exhibit clinical expertise in the handling and care of all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
Follow Universal Barrier Precautions to ensure safety for both patients and oneself in all care situations.
Demonstrate the ability to monitor and manage the surgical environment, ensuring proper traffic control, adherence to dress codes, and compliance with operating room sanitation policies and procedures.
Familiarity with facility policies regarding decontamination, processing, and sterilization of all instruments and supplies is essential.
Exhibit competence in performing assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the specific needs of the patient population served by the department.
Adapt patient assessment, treatment, and care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, and developmental needs of each patient.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Completion of a Surgical Technology program is mandatory.
Experience:
Two or more years of relevant experience is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
BLS certification is required.
Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation, or a valid LVN/LPN License is required.
