Overview:
Pharmacy Technicians operate under the guidance of Clinical Pharmacists to deliver pharmacy services with care, precision, and effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
• Adheres to the established OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
Operational Duties and Responsibilities
• Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for performing only non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
• Processes medication orders as per physician directives in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols - Accurately verifies computerized patient medication records. Maintains comprehensive and accurate patient drug records. Compounds non-sterile pharmaceuticals. Delivers services efficiently and promptly.
• Dispenses controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records as mandated by law and institutional policies.
• Ensures that daily departmental activities are completed and documented.
• Maintains the necessary competency for the current job title/position.
• Keeps current technician license. Ensures that relevant continuing education records and licensure are kept in departmental files. Participates in staff meetings.
• Completes all required competency and skills assessments.
• Specialty Area - Acts as the technician in specialized areas such as the operating room or pharmacy work areas outside the central pharmacy.
• Ambulatory Care - Provides assigned ambulatory pharmaceutical care services, including but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, transition of care, and discharge medication reconciliation.
• Retail - Conducts outpatient distributive functions related to entering prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications for new and refilled prescriptions, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pick-up or delivery.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
• Ensures safe, appropriate, and cost-effective drug therapies for patients in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Accurately reads, extracts, and interprets information from patient medical records.
• Identifies and reports suspected adverse drug reactions in a timely manner.
• Coordinates pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families following institutional protocols.
• Engages in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collects data, conducts monitoring and inspections, and maintains logs, records, and other documentation as assigned.
• Provides services efficiently and in a timely manner.
Occupational Hazards
• Potential exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic and cytotoxic drugs, as well as cleaning solutions), and risks of injury from needles and other sharp instruments.
• Risk level 0 exposure category.
• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not utilized.
• Possible exposure to biological materials when involved in direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).
Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience:
- Pharmacy experience is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of practice is required.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician is preferred.
