Overview:
Pharmacy Technicians operate under the guidance of Clinical Pharmacists to deliver pharmaceutical services with care, precision, and effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
Operational Duties and Responsibilities
• Pharmacy Technicians exclusively perform non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
• Prepares medication orders as per physician directives in accordance with established protocols, ensuring accurate verification of computerized patient medication records. Maintains comprehensive and precise patient drug records. Compounds non-sterile pharmaceuticals and delivers services promptly and efficiently.
• Distributes controlled substances to patient care areas and keeps records as mandated by law and institutional regulations.
• Confirms that daily departmental activities are completed and documented.
• Maintains the necessary competencies for the current job title/position.
• Holds a current technician license and ensures that continuing education records and licensure are up-to-date in departmental files. Participates in staff meetings.
• Completes all required competency and skills assessments.
• Specialty Areas - Functions as the technician in specialized areas such as the operating room or pharmacy sectors outside the central pharmacy.
• Ambulatory Care - Offers ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, transition of care, and discharge medication reconciliation.
• Retail - Executes outpatient distribution tasks related to processing prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications for new and refilled prescriptions, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pick-up or dispatch.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
• Ensures safe, appropriate, and cost-effective medication therapies for patients in line with established policies and procedures.
• Accurately reads, extracts, and interprets information from patient medical records.
• Identifies and reports suspected adverse drug reactions promptly and accurately.
• Coordinates pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families according to institutional protocols.
• Engages in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collects data, conducts monitoring and inspections, and maintains logs and records as assigned.
• Provides services efficiently and in a timely manner.
Occupational Hazards
• Potential exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic and cytotoxic drugs, as well as cleaning agents), as well as risks of cuts or punctures from needles and other sharp instruments.
• Risk category 0 exposure.
• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not employed.
• Possible exposure to biological materials during direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).
Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience:
- Prior pharmacy experience is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of practice is required.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician is preferred.
