Surgical Services Technician

Overview:

The Surgical Services Technician plays a crucial role in the surgical team by performing various technical tasks to assist in the preparation and care of patients prior to surgery. This position involves preparing the patient's skin for surgical procedures in accordance with established hospital protocols. The technician is responsible for maintaining sterile techniques and actively monitoring for any potential breaches in aseptic practices. Providing comfort and emotional support to patients during their pre-operative phase is essential, as is the safe transportation of patients to and from the Operating Room (OR). The technician also positions patients appropriately based on the surgical procedure and manages biological specimens with care. Additionally, the technician prepares the OR by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies tailored to the specific surgical case.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Uphold the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, which include being a Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
2. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, execute all tasks related to direct patient care and assistance in the OR before and during surgical interventions.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in scrubbing for at least three specialty areas, such as Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, and Robotics, among others.
4. Establish and maintain a sterile environment, passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, and assisting as directed.
5. Utilize the physician preference card as a foundational guide for case preparation and OR setup.
6. Ensure that preference cards are regularly updated and comprehensive.
7. Collaborate effectively as part of the surgical team, contributing to patient care planning and execution.
8. Maintain a safe surgical environment by consistently applying technical and aseptic practices.
9. Exhibit clinical expertise in the management and care of all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
10. Adhere to Universal Barrier Precautions to ensure safety for both patients and staff in all care situations.
11. Demonstrate the ability to monitor and regulate the surgical environment, ensuring proper traffic control, dress codes, and compliance with OR sanitation policies.
12. Familiarize oneself with facility policies regarding the decontamination, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies.
13. Adapt patient assessment and care methods to meet the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, and developmental needs of each patient served.
14. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required.

Experience:
Preferred candidates will have two or more years of relevant experience.

Licenses and Certifications:
BLS certification is required.
Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation, or a valid LVN/LPN License is required.
