Position Summary


The Construction Materials Testing Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the successful execution of daily tasks related to the evaluation of concrete, soil, asphalt, and various other construction materials.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands for typing, handling, or feeling; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear. Body motions include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Lifting and/or moving up to thirty-five lbs. regularly is expected, and up to seventy-five lbs. on occasion, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The testing process for various construction materials (i.e., soils, concrete, asphalt, etc.) is repetitive in nature several times per hour.
  • The technician's primary duty involves testing soil densities and concrete samples (air, temperature, mix design, etc.), which requires extensive manual lifting and handling.
  • Weights in the zero to seventy-five lbs. range are frequently lifted (from thirty-three percent up to sixty-six percent of the task period) with a frequency of ten to thirty-five repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Weights in the range of thirty-five to seventy-five plus lbs. (concrete cylinders and soils) are frequently lifted (from fifteen percent to thirty percent of the task period) with a range of five to fifteen repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Construction materials are manually lifted and carried distances averaging from a few feet to seventy-five feet, occasionally exceeding seventy-five feet in walking distance, and are unloaded manually at the lab for testing, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Workdays typically range from seven to twelve hours.
  • This position involves exposure to intense sun, heat, humidity, rain, thunderstorms, and other adverse weather conditions.
  • Job site conditions may vary and can include wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and uneven surfaces, with natural and man-made obstacles.
  • This role is primarily exposed to outdoor weather conditions and construction sites where noise levels can be moderate to loud.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure compliance with project testing requirements and specifications.
  • Travel to job sites to conduct testing of soil, concrete, and other construction materials.
  • Return samples to the office for further analysis.
  • Report data accurately and in a timely manner according to applicable testing procedures.
  • Operate testing equipment, ensuring proper functionality and maintenance as per company and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain the company vehicle, including scheduling oil changes and checking fluid levels.
  • Communicate with the dispatch team and/or field supervisor regarding job status and locations.
  • Prepare testing reports using Field Data Collection (FDC) software.
  • Complete daily time and labor reports in accordance with company policy.
  • Adhere to all company safety procedures and policies.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
  • Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check screening.
  • Proficient in reading and writing, including interpreting safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop and learn Field Data Collection (FDC) software.
  • Mathematical skills to perform basic calculations.
  • Reasoning ability to follow instructions in various formats.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • ACI Level I Certification.
  • Earthworks Construction Inspection Certification - Level I and II.
  • Experience in construction and/or engineering.
  • Familiarity with Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Construction.
