Job Overview: Key Responsibilities Primary Role

The Controller is instrumental in managing financial operations in line with US GAAP and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards within the organization. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of financial regulations, utility sector practices, and exceptional leadership capabilities to effectively oversee financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting activities. The Controller is also tasked with establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures for the accurate maintenance of fiscal records and the preparation of financial statements.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Provides strategic leadership to the accounting department, including overseeing the monthly financial close and management reporting processes. Responsible for the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures.

Ensures the preparation of all filings with regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, as well as other external financial statements. Guarantees compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Sarbanes-Oxley and other relevant laws.

Maintains compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and internal controls, while addressing and documenting all accounting and reporting deliverables issues.

Leads data requests for regulatory filings and stays informed about regulatory changes affecting the utility sector. Provides expert testimony in rate cases regarding accounting policies and financial statements as needed.

Responsible for the integration and consolidation of financial reporting across all subsidiaries and reporting to Berkshire Hathaway Energy. Cultivates relationships and promotes best practices across affiliated companies. Establishes and implements both short- and long-term goals, objectives, policies, and operational procedures for the accounting organization. Identifies and executes process enhancements.

Oversees the company's accounting systems and directs the IT strategy for the accounting department.

Manages financial audits and serves as the primary liaison with independent auditors. Develops precise budgets based on departmental and business unit plans, ensuring expenditures remain within budgetary limits.

Provides insights and support for the company's business strategy, identifying potential risks and opportunities for enhancing financial performance.

Mentors the accounting team, emphasizing effective communication, transparency, and collaboration with cross-functional leaders.

Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive company information.

Supports the company's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety protocols.

Monitors and enforces compliance requirements within the area of responsibility.

Ensures awareness and adherence to all compliance aspects relevant to the position and the organization.

Encourages a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within the finance department.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications Essential Education, Skills, and Environment

A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited institution, along with 8 years of relevant work experience. Previous experience in the utility sector and leadership roles is preferred. A Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation is required.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SEC reporting standards.
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission guidelines and reporting obligations.
  • Experience with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and the COSO Internal Control Integrated Framework.

Demonstrated skills such as:

  • Leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, prioritization, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with executives, managers, colleagues, and the public.
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical capabilities.
  • Proven leadership experience with the capacity to motivate and manage a team.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial software and ERP systems (e.g., Oracle).
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

General office environment. No special physical demands required.

Compensation

Annual Salary: $176,300 (Min) to $207,500 (Mid); Up to 20% Short Term Incentive Plan target opportunity at the discretion of the company. This is a non-represented position.
