Job Overview: Key Responsibilities Primary Objective

The Controller is integral in managing financial activities in alignment with US GAAP, ensuring the organization adheres to regulatory standards. This position demands a comprehensive grasp of financial regulations, particularly within the utility sector, coupled with robust leadership capabilities to supervise financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting processes. The role encompasses the formulation and upkeep of accounting principles, practices, and procedures essential for maintaining fiscal records and generating financial reports. The Controller will oversee both external and internal financial reporting, including general, plant, and fuel accounting.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Provides strategic leadership for the accounting division, including the monthly financial close and management reporting. Responsible for establishing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures.

Ensures accurate preparation of all regulatory filings with relevant authorities, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, along with other external financial statements. Guarantees compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Manages adherence to generally accepted accounting principles and internal controls, addressing any accounting and reporting issues that arise.

Leads data requests for regulatory submissions and stays informed about regulatory changes affecting the utility sector. May provide written and oral testimony in rate cases regarding accounting policies and financial statements.

Responsible for consolidating all financial reporting related to various entities and reporting to Berkshire Hathaway Energy. Fosters relationships to identify and implement best practices across affiliated companies. Establishes and executes both short- and long-term goals for the accounting organization.

Oversees the maintenance of the company's accounting systems and directs the IT strategy for the accounting division.

Coordinates financial audits and serves as the primary liaison with independent auditors. Develops precise budgets based on departmental and business unit objectives, ensuring expenditures remain within approved levels.

Provides insights to enhance the company's business strategy, identifying potential risks and opportunities for financial performance enhancement.

Mentors the accounting team, emphasizing effective communication, transparency, and collaboration with cross-functional leaders.

Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive company information.

Supports adherence to company policies and procedures, including workplace safety regulations.

Monitors compliance requirements for the area of responsibility.

Ensures all compliance aspects of the role are understood and adhered to, aligning with all relevant policies and regulations.

Encourages a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within the finance department.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications Essential Education, Skills, and Environment

A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited institution, accompanied by 8 years of relevant experience. Previous experience in the utility sector and leadership roles is preferred. A Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation is mandatory.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SEC reporting requirements.
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission guidelines and reporting standards.
  • Experience with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the COSO Internal Control Integrated Framework.

Demonstrated skills such as:

  • Leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems (e.g., Oracle).
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

General office environment with no special physical demands required.

Compensation

Annual Salary: $176,300 (Min) to $207,500 (Mid); Up to 20% Short Term Incentive Plan target opportunity at the discretion of the company.
