Job Overview: Key Responsibilities Primary Objective

The Controller is integral in managing financial activities in line with US GAAP and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards within the organization. This position requires a profound knowledge of financial regulations, practices within the utility sector, and exceptional leadership capabilities to efficiently oversee financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting processes. The role encompasses the establishment and upkeep of accounting principles, practices, and procedures necessary for maintaining fiscal records and generating financial reports. The Controller will supervise both external and internal financial reporting, including general, plant, and fuel accounting.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Provides strategic leadership to the accounting division, including the monthly closing process and management reporting. Oversees the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures.

Accountable for the oversight of all filings with regulatory bodies, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Ensures adherence to generally accepted accounting principles and internal controls, addressing and documenting any accounting and reporting issues.

Leads the preparation of regulatory filings and stays informed about changes in regulations affecting the utility sector. May provide written and oral testimony in rate cases regarding accounting policies and financial statements.

Responsible for the integration and consolidation of financial reporting across all entities and reporting to Berkshire Hathaway Energy. Fosters relationships and identifies best practices across affiliated companies. Establishes and implements both short- and long-term goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the accounting organization. Identifies and executes process enhancements.

Oversees the maintenance of the organization's accounting systems and directs the IT strategy for the accounting division.

Manages financial audits and serves as the primary liaison with independent auditors. Develops accurate budgets based on departmental and business unit plans; monitors expenditures to ensure alignment with budgetary levels.

Provides insights and support for the organization's business plan, identifying potential risks and opportunities for enhancing financial performance.

Mentors the accounting team, emphasizing effective communication, transparency, and collaboration with cross-functional leaders.

Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive company information.

Supports organizational policies and procedures, including workplace safety regulations.

Monitors compliance requirements within the area of responsibility.

Ensures awareness and adherence to all compliance aspects relevant to the position and the organization.

Promotes a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within the finance department.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Essential Education, Skills, and Environment

A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited institution, along with 8 years of relevant experience. Previous experience in the utility sector and leadership roles is preferred. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SEC reporting standards.
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission guidelines and reporting requirements.
  • Experience with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and the COSO Internal Control Integrated Framework.

Demonstrated skills such as:

  • Leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proven leadership experience with the capacity to inspire and manage a team.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial software and ERP systems (e.g., Oracle).
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

Compensation

Annual Salary: $176,300 (Min) to $207,500 (Mid); potential for a Short Term Incentive Plan target opportunity at the discretion of the company. This is a non-represented position.
