About the Position
The County of San Luis Obispo is seeking to fill permanent and limited-term, full-time Emergency Response Coordinator positions. Employees in limited-term roles receive benefits comparable to those of permanent, full-time staff, including vacation, sick leave, health, and pension benefits. The sunset date for these positions is June 30th, 2029. Details regarding the nature of the appointment will be shared with a formal job offer.

This role requires strong writing abilities and effective communication skills across different platforms, both verbally and in writing. Candidates must demonstrate logical thinking, composure under pressure, and a respectful demeanor in all circumstances.

This entry-level position does not necessitate prior experience in emergency management, but candidates should possess the innate skills and attitude to succeed in this role. Responsibilities include responding to emergency situations to provide logistical support, acting as a representative of the office or the emergency operations center during incidents, and ensuring effective communication between the incident site and the Emergency Operations Center.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

• Familiarity with the National Incident Management System, Standard Emergency Management System, and the Incident Command System.
• Understanding of emergency management training, planning, and preparation practices.
• Knowledge of ionizing radiation systems and emergency planning.
• Awareness of mutual aid, fire, rescue, and law enforcement systems.
• Proficiency in applicable local, state, and federal laws related to emergency management.

Essential Abilities:

• Coordinate personnel, communications, and resources for effective emergency preparedness and response.
• Provide information on emergency response planning through various methods.
• Collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure timely and organized responses to emergencies.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.
• Communicate effectively and establish strong working relationships.

Education and Experience:

A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required. An example of qualifying education includes:

Emergency Response Coordinator I:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in emergency management, public safety, business, public administration, or a related field.

Emergency Response Coordinator II:
The same educational background plus one year of experience at the level of Emergency Response Coordinator I.

Licenses and Certificates:

A valid driver's license is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment. Candidates must be available to work after hours, weekends, and endure long shifts during emergencies.
