Role Overview:

Proactive Support for First-Year Engineering Students:

The Academic Advisor I plays a crucial role in fostering the success and retention of newly admitted engineering students. This position is dedicated to providing personalized advisement and counseling to first-year students, ensuring they navigate their academic journey effectively. The advisor's primary focus is to assist students in selecting the appropriate engineering major and accessing essential resources that will support their academic persistence throughout their studies. The advisor engages with students during critical periods, such as registration, to facilitate their academic progress and compliance with tracking requirements. Building meaningful relationships with advisees is paramount, as it encourages regular interactions that promote student development. The advisor also manages probation documentation and collaborates with colleagues in the Undergraduate Student Affairs office to ensure students receive the necessary support during challenging times. Participation in orientation programs is also a key responsibility, as the advisor aids first-year students and their families in preparing for their academic endeavors.

Collaboration within Engineering Student Affairs:

As a vital member of the Engineering Undergraduate Student Affairs team, the advisor will engage with various programs aimed at enhancing student success and retention. Responsibilities include:

Collaborating with the College of Engineering First-Year Advising Team to support the retention of all first-year engineering students by providing essential tools and resources for academic and professional achievement.Contributing to New Student Programs, including orientation initiatives that welcome and transition first-year students into the university environment.Encouraging student involvement in organizations and activities that foster personal and professional growth.
External Collaboration:

The advisor must also work effectively with various campus partners to enhance the overall student experience. Key interactions include:

Participating in orientation programs to improve the experience for new students and their families.Establishing strong relationships with departmental advisors within the engineering disciplines.Engaging with advising councils and committees to contribute to the broader advising community.Collaborating with other university colleges and units as necessary to support student needs.Pursuing professional development opportunities to enhance advising skills and knowledge.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned to ensure the effective operation of the department.

Salary Range: $47,000-$50,000, based on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Master's degree in education, counseling, or a related academic field, or a Bachelor's degree with one year of relevant experience.

Preferred: A Master's degree is highly desirable, along with experience in advising undergraduate students, particularly at the freshman level. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is familiarity with university regulations and procedures that facilitate student recruitment and retention. The advisor must demonstrate sound judgment and maintain confidentiality in all interactions.
