Professor of Coastal Engineering

Job Type: Tenure-Track Faculty

Categories: Engineering

Department: Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment

Position Overview

The Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment (ESSIE) is seeking applications for a full-time, tenured/tenure track faculty position at the rank of Professor in Coastal Engineering.

This role is part of a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing our interdisciplinary research program and establishing a new undergraduate curriculum in Coastal Engineering.

We are looking for a forward-thinking candidate who is eager to contribute to advancements in science and technology within this rapidly evolving field, while also supporting curriculum development and student training at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

Field Significance

Coastal Engineering is a dynamic discipline, with increasing demand for specialized training. Recent trends indicate a significant rise in grant funding, facilitating substantial advancements in both fundamental and applied research.

The adoption of innovative concepts such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' "Engineering with Nature" has prompted considerable national investments aimed at integrating coastal restoration with engineering practices.

This approach emphasizes enhancing the resilience of both natural ecosystems and engineered structures by aligning engineering methodologies with natural processes.

Collaboration among researchers, governmental agencies, and academic institutions is essential for driving progress in Coastal Engineering.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Coastal Engineering or a closely related discipline and demonstrate substantial experience in leading large-scale field studies involving multiple investigators.

A key responsibility of this position includes fostering collaborative coastal research efforts with a diverse group of faculty and students.

This collaboration will involve members from ESSIE, the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering, and the Center for Coastal Solutions (CCS), which has secured significant external research funding and established numerous partnerships.

The successful candidate should have a proven track record of securing federal research funding and the ability to work effectively with faculty from various departments.

In addition to contributing to a vibrant research environment, candidates are expected to build strong partnerships with industry to prototype and test innovative technologies in real-world settings.

Educational Commitment

ESSIE is dedicated to a robust educational mission, offering undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, as well as graduate programs in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering.

Our undergraduate programs are highly ranked, and we are actively working towards establishing an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in Coastal Engineering.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for launching this new program.

Diversity and Inclusion

We value diversity among faculty, students, and staff and are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for research and learning.

We encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply, as we seek to enhance our community with a broad range of perspectives.

Compensation

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit an application that includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, references, research statement, and teaching statement.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
